In doing initial research for my report I have discovered that not many narratives dealing with death for children exist in games. I started off looking at narrative for children in general but became more interested in how narrative aimed at children can help them to deal with emotional issues.
This is something which has not been widely explored in games and I believe it is something that may begin to be seen more and more over the next few years. I think that we are looking to make games with more purpose than just entertainment. An example of this is the studio Preloaded Games whose entire ethos is to create games with purpose.
There are many books I have discovered in my studio research which aim to help children understand and deal with the emotions caused by bereavement. Dealing with death is also a common theme in children's animated movies such as Disney and Japanese company Studio Ghibli. By looking in more depth at the ways that this kind of narrative are delivered to children I will be able to greater understand the ways in which stories help children to grow emotionally and this will help influence my own studio work.
