Environment concepts

I started by designing concepts for the dreamlike world that the boy will visit to look for his sister. By looking at plant life that really exists I think I have been able to design some realistic looking forms.

I started by coming up with a basic composition and forms in grey scale. I like this first composition as I think it does give an idea of depth but it's a little boring and I don't think it conveys the scale I want it to.

This was the second composition idea I had and I much prefer this one. I think it has a lot more depth and it draws you into the environment. However I need to move the focal point (which is the door on the tree) more to one side in order for the viewer's eye to be more easily led through the composition. I need to be more aware of the 'golden areas' when thinking of composition. I also want the viewer to feel like they are looking at the environment from a child's point of view so I'm going to drop the camera down further in order to get this idea across.

Here I have moved the tree to the right and dropped the viewpoint down much nearer to the ground. I think this composition is a lot more effective because you really feel small in comparison to the plants and I wanted an exaggerated sense of scale. I want the viewer to feel like the environments are impressive and fantastical so I think that exaggeration is a good way to do this.

These are the final coloured environment examples. The second just has a blue filter as I felt it looked more like night time and it adds to the dreamlike quality I want.  Overall I'm happy with this example and I think it shows how I want the other world to look.
