Girl Concepts

Here are my thumbnail sketches of concepts for the girl character. I wanted to make sure she looked like a ghostly figure without being too scary. I had the idea of giving her small wings but decided it had too many religious connotations and I didn't want the imagery to become confusing or to have too many links with religious ideas. I want the character to have a sort of ethereal feeling and I decided the best way to do this is by giving the character a floaty, smoky quality.

This is the final design I went with but I felt like the outline was too heavy or dark so I tried changing the colour of the outline.
I much prefer the character having a lighter outline, it clearly defines a difference between her and the other characters visually. It is immediately obvious to the reader that she is different and I think it creates the ethereal quality I wanted to achieve.

I decided to name her Lily. I wanted to give her a pretty name that would compliment her visually so I thought about names of flowers as they are generally seen as pretty girls names. The flower lily is a symbol of innocence and peace and is often presented at funerals because it symbolizes the return to innocence of the soul, so I thought it would tie in to both the story and the look of the character.

In thinking about the name for Lily I decided on a name for the boy too. It needed to fit with the name Lily so I went for a traditional English name. I decided on Harvey because I felt like it fits with the name Lily in terms of sound and general feeling. The name Harvey means brave or warrior so I think it is a fitting name for a protagonist.
