To get some inspiration I looked at some examples of boys bedrooms and the first that came to mind was Andy's room in Toy Story. A lot of the story takes place in Andy's room and his personality and likes are shown a lot by what is present in his room.
Toy Story (Pixar 1995)
Toy Story (Pixar 1995)
Toy Story 3 (Disney-Pixar 2010)
Toy Story 3 (Disney-Pixar 2010)
The last two images show Andy's room as he has grown up a little to a teenager. In the movie the change in Andy as he is growing up is largely shown through the differences in his room. This shows how much of his character and personality is shown through his bedroom.
Using Sketchup I quickly made the basic shapes of the room and the furniture etc that I wanted to include in the room and then exported this image to Photoshop and began putting the details over the top. I found this way of working very useful because it helped to get everything in the right proportions and make sure that the perspective was correct. I definitely think this helped to speed up the design process.
I ended up flipping the image horizontally whilst colouring the image and I felt that it looked better this way around, I think that the composition feels more balanced this way around.
I feel like this was a really valuable exercise to do, I now know a lot more about my character and he has become a lot more three dimensional and believable. Now that I know what kind of person he is I feel like I can tell his story a lot better.
