Ian McCaig - The Art of Visual Storytelling

I recently watched this interview with Ian McCaig and I found it very interesting. McCaig is a very well known character concept artist who has worked on a lot of films, most notably the Star Wars franchise. In this video he talks about the way we tell stories visually. I found it really inspiring to see someone involved in concept art who is so enthusiastic about story telling. Although he talks mostly about films I think that a lot of the things he talks about can be applied to any type of story telling. At the base of all media is the story, it's just the way that it is told that is different.

I also feel like there are a lot of parallels between the film industry and the game industry. During the interview he talks about how the big budget studios have become concerned with doing the same types of films because they're safe and they know what will sell, and the big hollywood films are usually about making money so they rely on formulas of storytelling. He then goes on to say that this is good in a way because it leaves a lot of room for independent film companies to come in and do films which address more serious issues or be more experimental with story telling. I think this can be applied to the games industry in some ways too, a lot more big budget games are beginning to follow certain formulas because they know they will sell and this has allowed smaller indie studios to become a lot more free to make games which are more experimental or deal with issue and tell stories in a different way.

Ian McCaig really inspires me because I feel like I really want to tell stories, and that is why I create things, even if it's a single piece of artwork it's still telling a story. The most important thing in my current project is the story and I feel like I am happy with the narrative I have devised, I just need to find the best way to show that story.
