Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Hotel Dusk is a DS graphic adventure game released in 2006 in Japan. The game plays like a sort of visual novel. The player takes the role of Kyle Hyde who is a detective trying to solve puzzles to uncover a mystery involving his former partner. The DS itself is used in an unconventional way and is turned 90 degrees on it's side so it is like a book. The player uses the touch screen to move around and talk to people and to solve puzzles and write notes. The game offers a feature to flip which side the touch screen is as the player holds it depending on their dominant hand.

The art style of hotel dusk is very simple but very stylish. It goes well with the fact that you hold the DS like a book as the characters look like they are illustrations in a novel. There are very few movements in characters when you talk to them but the lack of animation in the characters is made up for by a really great story and well written dialogue which brings out the personality.

Monkey Island

The Monkey Island games are point and click adventures. These type of games are the direct descendants of the early text adventure games. Because of the development in graphics more of the action is available to be told using environment and characters rather than text. The game features the same types of actions that are performed in text adventures. Look at, talk to, open these sorts of actions. The game was given a complete graphic overhaul recently and was made available on xbox live and pc. It is definitely a cult classic sort of series and the most popular point and click adventure available.

Professor Layton

Professor Layton games are the best selling titles for the DS consoles. Professor Layton has been able to get people playing games that wouldn't normally play video games. My father got a DS system just to play these games and he would never normally play and console type games. The gameplay is very puzzle driven and has very well told plot lines to each game. I also think the visual style helps to add to it's appeal.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

The Phoenix Wright series is very popular, especially in Japan. Players must act as a lawyer and gather evidence and then present this in court in order to prove your client innocent. The story lines are always excellent and the court room sections are very exciting to play.
