Can games for children move into seriousness?

Introduction:

Video games are synonymous with entertainment and having fun but can they become more than that? Over the years movies and books have addressed important issues as well as being entertaining, there are even examples of them being produced with the express purpose of helping the audience to deal with difficult emotions. Games are a bit behind the other popular entertainment mediums because as an industry it is still in its infancy, but with the dramatic expansion over the past few years and the inclusion of more and more groups of people in its demographic, does the games industry have a responsibility to address more serious issues? In this essay I would like to explore whether games have the potential to become more serious and to help children deal with emotional issues in the same way films have.
